Debra Barnett

November 4, 1951 — September 6, 2018

Debra Barnett, age 66 passed away on September 6, 2018 at her home in Mt. Vernon, Ark. Born November 4, 1951 in Marshall, Ark to Leonard and Sue (Wallis) Horton.
She is preceded in death by her father Leonard Horton. Survivors include: her mother, Sue Horton of Marshall, Ark; husband Thomas of 49 years, daughter Shelly (Jay) Hooper, son John, granddaughter Rachel all of Mt. Vernon, Ark; Sister Louella Scroggins of Clinton, Ark; Brother Rod (Leisha) Horton of Marshall, Ark.  Other Survivors include 3 nieces: Letha (Steve) Hendrickson, Haley (Kyle) Yarbrough, and Hattie Horton; 1 nephew Edward (Allison) Scroggins; 3 great-nieces: Rue Ragsdale, Sarah and Adley Scroggins; 2 great-nephews Gus Scroggins and Colt Yarbrough. Debra loved reading and talking for hours with family on the phone or sitting on the back porch enjoying the peace and quiet of the farm.  She was quick-witted, a deep thinker, and very passionate of any endeavor she found interesting.  Learning to play piano and to cook as a young girl she perfected both through trial and error, questioning others, and as with anything she attempted with zest and determination.  She enjoyed working in the yard and farm and finishing wood including furniture, cabinets, trim and art projects with Rachel.  She was known to her children to be very insightful, poetic, wise and to always think of others. She loved trees, animals, and cooking and eating meals with her family and friends.  Her main life focus was always her home and time spent with her family.  She loved being a wife, a mom, and a Nana.  A sinner saved by grace, she was quick to defend her faith and the truth.  As a girl, she attended the old Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church near her home in Baker, Ark.  She was saved, and later baptized as young wife and mother when she joined East Side Missionary Baptist Church in Marshall, Ark.  At the time of her death, she was a member of Happy Hollow Baptist Church in Vilonia, Ark. She was a true friend to all that loved her.  Her smile, laugh, and selfless spirit will be truly missed.  As she was known to say, “At the end of the day, it’s all about how you treat people.”
